Rainstorms Kill 36 In Southwest China, 13 Missing
RAN (BEIJING, CHINA)--On 20 June 2006, a Reuters AlertNet reported parts of southwest China suffered more flooding and landslides on Wednesday as officials raised the death toll to 36. The Ministry of Civil Affairs said 13 residents are still missing, while some 292,000 residents had been evacuated as of Wednesday after 17,000 houses collapsed. Worst hit was the municipality of Chongqing and the neighboring provinces of Sichuan, Guizhou and Hubei, affecting some 8.7 million people. In Sichuan's Dazhou, as a result of the storms at least 10 people died, flooding occurred in 13 village schools, and there are blocked roads and downed telecommunication and power lines.
