China Netcom Completes Third Generation (3G) Testing To Broadcast 2008 Olympics Water Races

PD (CHINA)--On 10 August 2007, China Daily through People's Daily Online stated China Netcom plans to build the world's most advanced telecommunications network in Qingdao for the Sailing Regatta of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. China Netcom telecom facilities include trunk telecom lines, a landing station for the East Asia Crossing (EAC) submarine cable system and an upgrade of the Internet Protocol's local network and main exchange stations. A newly laid submarine cable linking the Qingdao landing station with the EAC submarine cable system reportedly has a transmission capacity of 40G. The landing site in Quingdao is half the distance between Chinese cities and that of Japan and South Korea. The submarine cable system will guarantee high quality, live audio/video transmission for the sailing regatta of the Games to the world. The report states China Netcom, Qingdao Branch, is also the only local telecom operator to have tested the TD-SCDMA network, China's third generation (3G) mobile telecommunication technology.
